I have some questions about earthquakes. Can you help me?

My friend, who is a science teacher, told me the area we live in (Yosemite) won't be affected by earthquakes because it's mostly granite here. We live very close to Mammoth mountain which is a very active geological area. Could she possibly be correct? It doesn't make sense to me.
