How can i improve my credit??

my credit stinks because i had to file bankruptcy three years ago. i want to take out a personal loan and consolidate my credit, so that i only have one bill. however, i am not a homeowner. i dont want to go further into debt, but i think that if i took out a personal loan, i would be able to straighten my credit out. i cannot find anyone willing to give me a loan though, and dont think i should keep searching because that impacts my fico???????
